| 8-9-2004: I had a Penske 8891 left over from my ZX9. (I sold it with the stock shock.) I called up the Penske folks to see if it would fit and they said "yes". I wasn't sure if they understood that I was talking about an '03, but I'd try anyway. I had my friend Andy weld up a contraption to let me lift the bike through the swingarm pivot, taking weight off the shock. It worked great on the ZX-9, so I figured I try it on the 600. I had to buy a smaller rod, which would come back to haunt me. I measured the Penske, and it was about 1/8" longer than the Kayaba, so I left it alone. I'll have to find out what the spring rates are. (I have to remeasure my sag, which will tell me if I'm in the ballpark.) I removed the hugger to make more room. I also removed the right-side footpeg bracket. This made the installation much easier on the 900. Anyway, I nudge the bike and the rod bends. Fortunately I catch in and my wife is nearby to rescue me. I end up using the floor jack with a board under the oil pan/exhaust. It fit just fine. The reservoir sticks out just a little. I think it'll be OK on the track, I just have to be careful that I don't snag my jeans on the street. I haven't had time to evaluate it yet. That's what track days are for. |
