Family Room

Hello coolness                                                                                            December 2005

Several of the houses in my subdivision had corner fireplaces like mine. One of the options was to put an entertainment center above the fireplace. I decided to do the same. This could also allow me to get rid of the big center I brought over from the old house, freeing up floorspace in the room.

I figured I'd put the equipment as close to the fireplace as possible, so the kids could change tapes, etc. I sized the hole for my 35" Panasonic tube TV. Since I was having work done in the room below I would have the contractor run cables for a 5.1 setup here. (7.1 would require too much work, and the kneewall by the kitchen would limit speaker placement. Besides, it's just my family room, not my home theater.)

Fast-forward a few months (before construction started) and Costco is selling a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD for just under $2000. I could swing this. If I get a flat panel I don't need such a big hole in the wall; I can just have a couple of shelves for the equipment. I also get the idea for shelves beside the fireplace. directly under the front speakers, for DVD's and VHS tapes. I get the green light from Susan and home comes the LCD.

Until construction it sits on top of the old entertainment center. It's shorter, vertically, than the older 35" 4:3 tube TV.
