With sound advice, the
closets are done.
June 07
With a little help from my daughter and father-in-law the
closets are finally done. I had seen the doors a the local shop and wanted to
emulate that look. I decided to put shelves in the closet for blankets and
stuff. Initially, I was going to make them solid wood, but after studying
acoustics a little, it became apparent the wire shelves would work better.
(Yes, I already bought that wood, too.) I only found white shelves, and painted
them black. The paint took a month to dry, I guess it reacted to the vinyl
coating. I thought the European hinges would be the best, as they would allow
the doors to fit tightly. I had originally designed the doors with the spine
segmented, but my father-in-law saw my plans and suggested a redesign.
Fortunately, I had purchased the wood, but not cut it. I used birch, as pine was
too knotty and warp-prone. I painted the frames black and covered them in black
GOM. After a little trimming I got them up. I thought about Art Deco doorknobs,
but decided against calling attention to the doors. Instead, I used white
plastic U-shaped handles spray-painted flat black. I removed the speaker grilles.
put them back in, and
everything looks and sounds great.
